Annual Volunteer Spring Cleanup 2013

If it rains we will move it to the following Saturday (May 4. 2013)

(Feel free to come anytime Saturday and stay as long as you want)

Time for our annual Willis Cemetery volunteer cleanup!  The event is family friendly and jobs are everything from picking up sticks to cleaning around fences and tomb stones.  Be sure to bring your lawn tools.  The most effective tool has been a hoe to remove the grass and dirt from the settled tombstones and fences.

Since the last cleanup we have had a variety of weather conditions.  The cemetery has been hit with everything from strong winds to heavy rains and even drought conditions.

If we work together as a community on Saturday, April 27,  we CAN make a difference in making the Willis Cemetery more beautiful.

If you can not attend, we ask that you send  someone else in your place or even make a donation to help assist.

Annual Spring Clean-up for the Cemetery.

"I can remember in the past there was an ice storm in Willis that left many broken branches in the Cemetery.  Volunteers came and helped us gather and haul off many trailer loads of debris.  I feel the time has come to make it an annual event.  Spring cleanup for the cemetery will be the last weekend in April every year.  We want to invite the local community and churches to help support the Willis Cemetery by attending this important annual event."

Thank you Rev. Dave Stovall and volunteers from the Abundant Life Church (1st United Pentecostal) of Willis for helping here at home on a project that greatly needed volunteers to help cleanup some of the graves in the old section of the Willis Cemetery. 
Many of the tombstones had sunk into the ground along with debris grown up in the iron fences.  We appreciate all the volunteers that came last weekend from Abundant Life Church and gave up their time to help those that lay to rest in the old section of the Willis Cemetery dating back to the 1800's.  It is this kind of caring spirit from the volunteers that came that will help maintain the Willis Cemetery for years to come.  I know that you will be blessed for your kindness and generocity in helping those families that lay to rest.

Thank you Frank Johnson along with Granbury's Texas Brigade, the United Son's of the Confederacy, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy for giving us the names of 20 Confederate Veterans that are buried in the cemetery.  We will have each of these soldiers listed under the "veterans" and "genealogy" section of this website along with the links to your websites.  We appreciate the hard work and dedication that went into finding and honoring these soldiers.

Mel Paddock has served the Willis Cemetery now for over 41 years.
From 2008-2012 the Willis Cemetery has had many improvements in addition to the normal maintenance.
The following is a list of projects:

Survey of property West of Cemetery Road (completed)

Fence Lines dead trees removed and hauled off

Accumulated trash collected and hauled off

Fence repairs off FM 1097 from "Hit and Run" (completed)

New 4 ft fence on both the East and West of Cemetery Road (completed)

New 6 ft fence on property West of Cemetery Road (completed)

Replaced all the 16 ft gates. (completed) 

Cleaned up many old graves sites in the "Old Section".

Signs for every gate that identify both the Gate letter and Section # have been installed to help everyone navigate in the cemetery.
